How to Attach Your Ankle Strap

The Wild Tribe Team 3 min read

Step 1 — Thread the Rope

Detach the rope attached to the velcro on your leash. Slide the end of the rope loop into the D-shaped ring located at the back of your board.

Step 2 — Secure the Rope

Pass the knotted end of the rope through the loop of the rope to secure it around the D-Ring. Pull it tight — the rope should not be able to slip off.

Step 3 — Attach the Leash

Open the velcro strap completely and insert it into the loop of the rope.

Step 4 — Lock the Velcro

Fold the first side of the velcro strap to lock the rope in the leash. Then fold the other side of the velcro and finalize the folding with the smallest strap. Your leash is now secured to your paddle board.

Safety First

Always wear your leash when paddle boarding. It keeps your board within reach if you fall — your board is your biggest flotation device on the water.

Step 5 — Secure to Your Ankle

Secure the ankle strap to your right or left foot depending on your preferences. Most paddlers attach it to their dominant foot's ankle, positioned at the back of the board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ankle should I attach the leash to?
Attach it to the ankle that feels most comfortable. Most paddlers use the ankle closest to the tail of the board. There's no strict rule.
Can I use the leash in a river or current?
In river or whitewater conditions, consider using a quick-release waist leash instead of an ankle leash. An ankle leash in moving water can become a safety hazard.
How often should I replace my leash?
Inspect your leash at the start of each season. Replace it if you see fraying, stiffness, or weak spots in the velcro or cord.
